The halter: Its history and its use

It is in 1333 that the term "Halter" comes from the word "Liecol", it is composed of word "lie" which means "Link" and "collar" which means "Neck".
The term "Halter" in English equals "Halter", it comes from a Germanic term meaning "What something is held by"

The halter is a harness piece designed for pets. The halter is mainly used to lead and attach animals. Although known primarily for horses, it is used for cattle because it is more comfortable than the traditional snuffboxes or the nasal ring to the rope. But also for goats, camels and sheep.

The use of the halter in animals requires work from the youngest age this for the animal to learn to respond correctly to the request made by the person who guides. He is expected to yield to the pressure exerted on the headboard behind the ears and follow his guide. The goal is to avoid entering a conflictual relationship that will make difficult the relationship that "human-animal" because it will be difficult to get his horse to the park for example if the horse does not have a good association of the halter. The halter could represent work for the horse and having to "buy" his horse with treats for him to come to us is not a good solution and does not reflect a good relationship.

It comes in many forms and materials. Thus it is found in leather, nylon, biothane or even synthetic. Depending on the material, the maintenance will require special care and regular so that it does not crack like leather that could dry or a simple cleaning with water for a halter in biothane.

It's possible to design your own knuckle halter yourself from a rope. It then becomes a so-called "ethological" halter or "American halter" because it was invented in the United States by cowherds-Berger (Cowboy) then imported into Europe in the 2000s by the craze for ethological riding.

Used as a working halter in western riding, it is designed to create pressure in the innervated and sensitive areas of the horse's head as well as behind the ears. It aims to work the horse to the loin more finely than with a basic halter dish but it helps preserve the horse's mouth. A little more economical than a classic halter the ethological halter is more severe than the classic halter and can be very dangerous if it is misused. Be careful never to tie a horse with a rope halter because if the horse panics and fires at the fox he risks serious injury.

Putting in the Park with the halter?

You can see horses in the park with their halter. According to them (the owners), it will be easier and faster to recover his horse. Unfortunately leaving the halter at the park is extremely dangerous for your horse. Indeed, it can be hooked in an object (trough, trailer etc), a tree or the fence by simply wanting to scratch. Not only can the injuries be very serious but he can kill himself. By panicking the horse will run out trying to break free. Many horses died after struggling for hours because they had to wedge their hoof (iron or not) in the halter by scratching their heads.
In addition, remember that if it is easier for you to catch your horse, it is also easier for thieves.

Horsekingstore just as the horse professionals strongly advise to remove the halter to the animals let go. When your horse refuses to come to the park, ground work with him can be done. Simply by teaching him to follow you with a rope around the neck. Otherwise you must break the halter association and / or rope = work by going to the park regularly but changing your program. Go get your horse but do not work with him, brush it, done the "work" on the ground or in the round but if it is noticeable, it must be a good time for him. So he will not be able to anticipate your coming and associate him with work. Not knowing what will happen will come back to you. However, be careful not to resume bad habits by no longer creating a moment of relaxation with him otherwise he will start associating the halter and work and will not come back.

How to adjust and choose your halter:

It is important for the safety of the horse or the animal to properly adjust the halter. Indeed, if the horse pulls the fox it can break the cervical vertebrae. The part of the throat should be placed under the throat and pay particular attention to the location of the noseband which should be placed at approximately The correct setting requires that the noseband is under the zygomatic process, about 2cm or 2 fingers for a horse and 1cm for a shetla
The maintenance of my halter according to its subject:

We mainly find nylon halter because they have the advantage of being light, not cer and are very resistant. The most are the varied and amazing colors that are proposed. One can find simple halter nylon, lined with leather or sheep for comfort.
Easy to maintain since it washes very well machine (attention anyway to protect the drum of your machine by putting your halter for example in a pillow, also to control that your buckle is stainless steel otherwise it will rust ).

Nylon has the disadvantage of burning your horse if he wears it for a long time (long trip, park) or if your horse shows an unexpected defense.

For this, a halter doubled with leather or sheep is recommended during long time of attachment or transport.
